There are several things to consider when planning to store valuable business or household items, it’s not just high temperatures but also moisture and humidity. Most companies offer slightly higher rates for climate controlled storage features, however keeping your precious items from sustaining damage due to high temperatures, freezing or humidity is definitely worth the investment. You should also think about the following:
- What are the temperature ranges where you live?
- What are you planning to store?
- How long do you plan to utilize a self storage unit?
#1 Electronics
Vintage electronics are popular collectibles and keeping your equipment or gadgetry safe and protected from the elements is a worthwhile cause. Be sure to remove all batteries, and ensure that you don’t store anything of value directly on the floor as it will be more susceptible to moisture. Label your boxes with suitable detail, especially fragile items, which should be double wrapped with bubble wrap or foam padding to protect the contents. Remember not to wrap electronics in shrink-wrap because moisture may get trapped inside. It’s a good idea to use beach towels or blankets to pack into boxes, which you can pick up cheaply at a second hand store.
#2 Wooden Furniture
A common problem for storage of wooden items is the surrounding temperature and humidity changes can cause the wood to expand or contract so a temperature controlled unit is the best option. It’s advisable to treat your wood furniture before you store any valuable items. Painted furniture may simply require a thorough clean however stained, dyed, oiled and waxed furniture may need special care, by applying linseed oil or furniture wax.
Once you have fully prepared your furniture, a good way to keep it protected is to wrap it with blankets and then shrink-wrap it. This will help prevent damage during transport and storage. Ensure that you allow for space between items so that air circulates between the furniture and you will be able to move your items more easily should you need to.
#3 Wine
Perfect storage conditions for wine is something the experts can spend all day debating however the reality is that when it comes to storing your wine, you will be fine if you put wine in a dark, largely undisturbed place with a moderate and fairly constant temperature. As for whether you need a specialised storage option or a simple storage unit that meets your needs, depends upon your specific needs and how often you plan to access the collection.
#4 Photos and Artwork
Often our most treasured possessions are not the family jewels but the family photos, paintings and art that tops the list. These are all items that need to be protected from UV exposure and humidity, they also need to be packaged and stored properly.
Storing photos is a temporary solution until you have the time or inclination to transfer them into digital files.
#5 Medical and Pharmaceutical Products
When it comes to medical or pharmaceutical products, reps often turn to their local self storage facility to keep their inventory and shipments safe. Choosing a specially climate controlled facility should be the first option and they should also ensure that the storage unit is clean and pest free. New or renovated storage facilities always seem to be a more attractive option however the older facilities with excellent maintenance programs and good reputations are also a good avenue to explore.
