Moving from an apartment to a house can be a great feeling. It’s a good time to evaluate your life and can make you feel like you are moving up in the world. It also marks a new chapter in your life and possibly for an entirely new future; potentially with kids, a garden and tons of new space to enjoy. Although it’s exciting, it can occasionally be a little overwhelming.

If you’ve been living in an apartment for a while, you will have gotten used to everything being taken care of for you. For example, if there was a problem with the plumbing, the maintenance man would be there in a flash. If a smoke alarm battery beeped, the battery would soon be changed. If cockroaches started appearing, a pest controller would soon be on his way. Now, unfortunately, it’s all up to you.

More Space, More Maintenance

A larger property often means a bigger outlay, as a house comes with a range of costs that an apartment may not necessarily need. Bills such as water, council rates and home insurance can be costly and must be considered when creating a budget. You will need to have money set aside for general maintenance such as repairs and lawn care. Depending on the property, your new home may require some upgrades, which can often be expensive. As long as you’ve factored these things into your budget, there is no reason to fear a move to a larger home as the move is often more exhilarating than frightening. In fact, there are many things to be excited about!

You will have a chance to fill your house with furnishings, bringing a fresh new look for your new home. The extra space in your new residence can often mean that you will need to buy new furnishings to fill it and it is advisable to set aside 40 percent of your disposable income towards decor and furnishings, always try to invest in pieces you really love. Although if you don’t quite have the budget, settle for just one quality piece for each room and find alternate ways to bulk up the rest of the decor. You might like to try to:

  • Take the opportunity to purchase second hand from furniture stores or sites like gumtree.com.au and ebay.com
  • Ask friends and family if they have spare items they no longer need
  • Recover old sofas to give them a new look
  • Use your personal style to beautify with accessories such as cushions
  • Repainting worn pieces with a fresh new paint job
  • Ask for deals if buying multiple items, bulk buys often make your purchase price considerably less
  • Wait for sales like those at the End of Financial Year or on Boxing Day

Personal Styling

You can create inspirational design boards on sites like Pinterest that allow you to have an online design space to map out your ideas. You will find a multitude of blogs offering a lot of advice for jazzing up old decor and creating an amazing new look from older pieces of furniture and art. As soon as you know you are moving into a house, start researching ideas for styling so you can stick to a running theme which will help with creating a cohesive look.

Stock your kitchen

Most apartments usually come with relatively small kitchens so you find yourself with extra space in a larger home which means you can finally deck it out with the appliances you’ve always wanted. So if you’ve always desired that flash new coffee machine, go out and get it but remember to only buy what you actually need!

Enjoy a garden

One of the best perks of moving into a larger home is the chance to enjoy some outdoor space. A nice outdoor setting and some plants should come first if you have a deck or courtyard to decorate. You’ll also require a lawn mower if your new place has a big backyard to maintain.
